Song Lyrics
Just in case you don’t know the song by heart just yet, we got you the song lyrics right here (you’re welcome):
Benson Boone – Beautiful Things
For a while there it was rough
But lately I’ve been doing better
Than the last four cold Decembers
I recall
And I see my family every month
I found a girl my parents love
She’ll come and stay the night
I think I might have it all
And I thank god everyday
For the girl he sent my way
But I know the things he gives me
He can take away
And I hold you every night
That’s a feeling I wanna get used to
But there’s no man as terrified
As the man who stands to lose you
Oh I hope I don’t lose you
Mmm
Please
Stay
I want you I need you oh God
Don’t
Take
These beautiful things that I’ve got
Please stay
I want you I need you oh God
Don’t take
These beautiful things that I’ve got
Please don’t take,
I found my mind I’m feeling sane
It’s been a while but I’m finding my faith
If everything’s good and it’s great why do I sit and wait till it’s gone
Oh I’ll tell ya I know I’ve got enough
I got peace,
And I got love,
But I’m up at night thinking I just might lose it all
Please stay
I want you I need you oh God
Don’t take
These beautiful things that I’ve got
Please stay
I want you I need you oh god
I need
These beautiful things that I’ve got
Meaning of the song “Beautiful Things”
Benson Boone’s song “Beautiful Things” is a story telling song.
At the beginning of the song, the protagonist suggests that he’s been through some personal struggles and difficulties for a long time but now he’s finally starting to feel more hopeful (“lately I’ve been doing better than the last four cold Decembers <…>”). There is a hint of a newly developed relationship with a girl that’s been going on for quite some time now, as his parents are already introduced to the girl and she’s been accepted by them with love (“I see my family every month, I found a girl my parents love <…>). There is also a hint of growing intimacy between the couple (“<…>She’ll come and stay the night, I think I might have it all <…>”).
As the song continues, protagonist reveals that as through the journey of overcoming his past struggles he has re-discovered his faith in religion and in his relationship with God he is humble (“<…>It’s been a while but I’m finding my faith <…>I know the things he gives me He can take away<…>”). The remainder of the song is filled with philosophical reflection of how fragile things are in life, awareness of the temporary nature of all things in this world. Protagonist accepts all of that through his faith in God, however, at the same time he’s feeling terrified of potential loss of the loved one that he continuously describes as “beautiful things” in this song, giving a sense that the love he feels to the girl is truly pure and deep.
Nature's Symphony in Benson Boone's “Beautiful Things” Music Video
In Benson Boone’s music video “Beautiful Things” the band is performing in a mountainous area near St. George, Utah.
Throughout the song’s duration we get to see the early morning (sunrise captured in the opening scene of the video), the day time and the video ends just around sunset.
The change of daylight resonates beautifully with the lyrics of the song. You can see it’s chilly in the early morning when Benson Boone sings about “last four cold Decembers”. Then it gets really bright with clear sunny skies when for the first time lyrics come “And I thank God everyday for the girl he sent my way”.
However, the remaining (and – the majority) part of the song goes when it’s afternoon already and the sky is clouded resonating with the uneasy feelings and expressed through the lyrics as Benson Boone sings about the fragility of things in life and about his fear of losing the newly found love with lines like “I know the things he gives me He can take away”, “there’s no man as terrified as the man who stands to lose you”, “I hope I don’t lose you”.
Video making choices in setting the scene, such as providing a panoramic view of the mountainous landscape, the chilly and windy weather and clouded skies, together amplify the melancholic mood of the song giving it more depth and creating a true sense of longing and unease.

Boone's Signature: Authenticity
From the posts he shares on social media, his pictures and interviews, Benson Boone shines positivity and kindness, he comes out as “just an ordinary guy”.
As he’s not trying to create some barrier through alter-ego, it makes it easy for his audience to connect to his music as there’s no barrier. Benson Boone creates an impression of someone who’s open and personal, which also reflects in his music – his lyrics often have a story telling element to them, have a meaning.
For that reason, although the artist has not made any official confirmation about this, there’s a reason to believe that the song “Beautiful Things” was inspired by personal experiences and that the story told by the protagonist in the song may actually have autobiographical elements from Benson Boone’s life.
