Back in 2013, Hozier released his debut single “Take me to church”, peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and going multi-platinum in several countries. Ever since, the Irish singer and songwriter continued releasing socially conscious hits, not afraid to speak about social justice, racism, domestic violence and human rights through his songs. His music is lyrical, poetic and deeply touching. Hozier has truly mastered the art of capturing storytelling, song after song delivering to his expanding fan base picturesque pieces on romance, religion and political realities.
Today we are reviewing Hozier’s music video of his most recent hit “Too Sweet”, released with his “Unheard”EP on 22 March 2024. The song has already peaked as number-one single in Ireland, the US, and the UK and the music video “Too Sweet” is going viral with 2,923,356 youtube views (and counting). So let’s dig into it!
The Song Lyrics
Hozier – Too Sweet
It can’t be said I’m an early bird
It’s ten o’clock before I say a word
Baby, I can never tell
How do you sleep so well
You keep telling me to live right
To go to bed before daylight
But then you wake up for the sunrise
You know you don’t gotta pretend
Baby, now and then
Don’t you just wanna wake up
Dark as a lake
Smelling like a bonfire
Lost in a haze
If you’re drunk on life, babe
I think it’s great
But while in this world
I think I’ll take my whiskey neat
My coffee black and my bed at three
You’re too sweet for me
You’re too sweet for me
I take my whiskey neat
My coffee black and my bed at three
You’re too sweet for me
You’re too sweet for me
I aim low
I aim true and the ground is where I go
I work late where I’m free from the phone
And the job gets done
But you worry some, I know
But who wants to live forever babe
You treat your mouth as if it’s heaven’s gate
The rest of you like you’re the TSA
I wish that I could go along
Babe, don’t get me wrong
You know you’re bright as the morning
As soft as the rain
Pretty as a vine
As sweet as a grape
If you can sit in a barrel
Maybe I’ll wait
Until that day
I’d rather take my whiskey neat
My coffee black and my bed at three
You’re too sweet for me
You’re too sweet for me
I take my whiskey neat
My coffee black and my bed at three
You’re too sweet for me
You’re too sweet for me
I take my whiskey neat
My coffee black and my bed at three
You’re too sweet for me
You’re too sweet for me
Waiting for the sour
Hozier’s song “Too Sweet” is exploring a relationship between 2 people who are complete opposites. The song is composed in a way like the protagonist is speaking to the lover, which adds a layer of intimacy and truthfulness, as if the listener is allowed into a private conversation.
The protagonist is painting a picture of himself throughout the song. He’s a night owl personality: “<…>It’s ten o’clock before I say a word<…>I take my <…> bed at three<…>”. He’s lacking ambition in life: “<…>I aim low<…>”, being sloppy at work: “<…>I work late where I’m free from the phone / And the job gets done<…>”. We can get the roughness of the protagonist’s personality, which is revealed through expressed preference for a sharp drink: “<…>I’d rather take my whiskey neat / My coffee black<…>”. We can also see the boldness of the protagonist’s personality in their attitude towards life: “<…>I aim true and the ground is where I go<…>who wants to live forever<…>”.
In parallel, the storyteller is describing his lover, and we clearly see that it’s a completely opposite personality type. The lover is described as an early riser: “<…>you wake up for the sunrise<…>”, well-mannered, polite person who is taking good care of their body and mind: “<…>You’re drunk on life<…>you sleep so well<…>You treat your mouth as if it’s heaven’s gate / The rest of you like you’re the TSA<…>”.
Protagonist tries to tell the lover that their relationship is impossible, suggesting it’s due to be ended. Through the lyrics we learn that the lover is trying to make him change his lifestyle: “<…>You keep telling me to live right / To go to bed before daylight<…>you worry some, I know<…>”. At the same time, we see the protagonist questioning his lover’s attitude towards life, like asking a question: ‘aren’t you tired of trying to be so perfect all the time?’, it’s apparent in the following lines: “<…>You know you don’t gotta pretend<…>Don’t you just wanna wake up / Dark as a lake / Smelling like a bonfire / Lost in a haze <…>”.
Protagonist’s heartbreak about ending the relationship is revealed through the way he describes his lover using very tender and comparisons: “<…>you’re bright as the morning / As soft as the rain / Pretty as a vine / As sweet as a grape<…>”. Storyteller explains that the lover is too pure for his rough personality: “<…>You’re too sweet for me<…>”. He exposes his need for someone matching his roughness for a relationship to work, picturing his lover’s personality as “pure” by comparing it to a sweet grape, and making it clear that the sweet and pure grape would have to sour and ferment turning into liquor for the couple to be compatible: “<….you’re<…>sweet as a grape / If you can sit in a barrel / Maybe I’ll wait<…>”.
